Native to China, Korea and Japan, kousa dogwood is a small, deciduous tree with a beautifully spreading, gently rounded canopy. It is highly desirable for both its outstanding ornamental qualities and resistance to dogwood anthracnose, a fungal disease which can trouble the flowering dogwood of eastern North America.
The branches of kousa dogwood are held in broad, horizontally layered tiers, giving it an elegant appearance even in the cold months of winter. Its attractive bark is mottled in shades of tan, gray and brown. In late spring, clouds of large, white flowers shine against a background of deep green, pointed, oval-shaped foliage. The blossoms are composed of four showy bracts which surround a central cluster small, less conspicuous green flowers. These are followed by distinctive, round, red fruits which ripen in autumn, and are edible to both birds and humans. The leaves develop appealing shades of purple and red in fall.
Kousa dogwood grows well in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, fertile, well-drained, neutral to acid soil; however, it is tolerant of a range of soil types. This lovely tree makes a fine specimen, and is wonderful when planted in groups among other trees and shrubs in larger landscapes. (info source: Lern2Grow.com)

Useful Info
Germination1. Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
2. Fill a nursery flat or other germination container, to within 1/2 inch of the rim, with a sterile germinating mix. Moisten the mix thoroughly.
3. Sow the seeds ~2 mm deep in the mix. Moisten the seeds and place the flat in a cold frame or in the refrigerator at +2-+4C for 90 days. Keep the seeds moist during this period.
4. Remove the flat from the refrigerator and place it in an area with indirect sunlight and where the temperature remains between +15-+20 C (60-68 F).
5. Keep in good ventilated room or place. Good air circulation is required.
5. Spray the seeds periodically with room-temperature water from a misting bottle to ensure they remain moist. Seeds typically germinate within 20 days to three months.
