Also called Taxus celebica. A Chinese native growing to 3 feet in a year ( fast for a Yew ) to an eventual size around 50 feet though some in its native Asia have reached 100 x 60 x 7 feet with great age. In 15 years it averages 17 feet. Its stiff 1.8 inch sharp pointed leaves are glossy dark green above and gray green below.
Though mostly unknown; this is by far the best Yew for the southern U.S. It is heat, sun and drought tolerant, and is far better adapted south of zone 7 than Taxus cuspidata. Hardy zone 6 to 9 (5 on sheltered sites ).
It is heat tolerant. It's habit is a narrow to broadly pyramidal. Dark green leaves are linear with spiny tips. Leaves turn to a reddish-green tint in winter. It is a fast grower which makes it an excellent candidate for a high quality hedge. Trim hedges from summer to early fall. Can be pruned and will grow up to 50 feet.
Thrives in almost any soil, acid or alkaline, as long as it is well-drained. Plants are very shade tolerant.
The plants produce very little fibrous root and should be planted in their final positions when still small. Plants in this genus are notably resistant to honey fungus. Dioecious. Male and female plants must be grown if seed is required. Other reports say that this species usually has monoecious flowers (separate male and female flowers, but both borne on the same plant).
Warning! Plant parts are poisonous if ingested.
